Shine the Light on Hunger Raises Food, Funds & Awareness

The 2009 Shine the Light on Hunger campaign has come to an end, and Chris Kircher, president of the ConAgra Foods Foundation, presented Food Bank for the Heartland with a check for $166,487.28. The check includes the proceeds collected from the ConAgra Foods Ice Rink in association with the Holiday Lights Festival and an additional donation from the ConAgra Foods Foundation.

Tim Williams and Kenya Walker of Baker’s Supermarkets also presented a check to The Food Bank. The $10,230.56 check was from donations collected at Baker’s stores in the Omaha-Metro area as part of Shine the Light on Hunger.

The campaign, which was held in conjunction with the Holiday Lights Festival, yielded over 150,000 pounds of food for the Food Bank. Shine the Light on Hunger raised awareness of hunger in the community and empowered people to make a difference. Hunger is an issue that affects thousands of people everyday right here Omaha.

Food Bank for the Heartland thanks everyone who participated in the 2009 Shine the Light on Hunger campaign!  For more information, check out this January 14 article in the Omaha World-Herald.

New Name, Same Mission

The Food Bank has undergone a facelift, of sorts, with a new name and a new logo! The Board of Directors voted to change the organization’s name to Food Bank for the Heartland.

“We wanted the new name to better reflect our mission,” said Susan Ogborn, President/CEO of the Food Bank. “While our distribution center and offices are in Omaha, we are a food bank for most of the state of Nebraska and a good portion of western Iowa.” Food Bank for the Heartland’s service area includes 77 counties in Nebraska and 16 in western Iowa.

A new web site is also in the works so check back frequently! The address is www.FoodBankHeartland.org.

Chef Duff Goldman will host The Food Bank's annual fundraiser on Thursday, February 25, 2010, at the Holiday Inn Central. The event is sponsored by The Hawks Foundation and presented by ConAgra Foods.

Hunger in Omaha

"I can't stand hearing my baby boy say that he's hungry and have problems helping him with that. Many times I went hungry so that my boy will be fed."
