Volunteering at Food Bank for the Heartland
Our volunteers are the best! They make it possible for The Food Bank to continue its mission of alleviating hunger in our community. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Chris Kline at (402) 331-1213 ext. 104. We are always looking for reliable individuals and groups to help with the following tasks:
Food Sorting
Duties: Volunteers work in our sorting room placing food items in boxes. Like items are boxed together. We need 10 to 12 volunteers to work in the sorting room.
Available Hours: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please contact Chris Kline at 331-1213 x104 to schedule a time.
Restrictions: No open-toed shoes or tank tops. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Because of safety reasons, The Food Bank prefers not to have children in the sorting room under the age of 10.
General Distribution Center Assistance
Duties: Volunteers are needed to keep The Food Bank distribution center and agency shopping store in a neat and orderly manner by assisting with painting, stocking and straightening shelves, sweeping and general cleaning.
Available Hours: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Restrictions: No open-toed shoes or tank tops. 16 years of age or older.
Senior Outreach
Duties: Volunteers pack shelf-stable food and personal items in boxes to be delivered to low-income seniors. The work is done in assembly line-like fashion. 20-25 volunteers are needed.
Available Hours: There is an occasional need to pre-pack boxes on Saturday mornings (usually 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.). Packing dates are determined one to two weeks in advance. If interested, email Chris Kline to be placed on a list of potential volunteers. When volunteer opportunities arise, notifications will be sent by email.
Restrictions: No open-toed shoes or tank tops. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Because of safety reasons, The Food Bank prefers not to have children under the age of 10 packing boxes.
Duties: Volunteers are also needed to deliver boxes of food and personal items to low-income senior facilities. Assist in loading boxes into the Food Bank cargo van and making deliveries.
Available Hours: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday through December. Hours may change in January.
Restrictions: Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older and have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
