True Stories

THE FOOD BANK FOR KIDS BACKPACK PROGRAM

Hearing firsthand stories about children digging in trash cans for food, hiding food in their pockets during school lunch, taking food from lunch pails in lockers, or The Food Bank for Kids BackPack Programasking neighbors for food has compelled The Food Bank to organize an effort to provide food for children on weekends - The Food Bank For Kids BackPack Program, begun in December 2006.

The Food Bank identifies a school with a high incidence of need for free or reduced-price school meals, then staff at that school identify chronically hungry students. Then The Food Bank provides a backpack filled with two breakfast meals and two lunch/dinner meals for those students to take home Friday afternoon. On Monday morning, the child returns the empty backpack to school so that it is there to be filled with food and taken home again on Friday afternoon.

If you and/or your place of work are interested in sponsoring a child’s backpack, $120 will provide a year of backpack meals for one child; contact Jewel to support The BackPack Program.
